Evil angel Gabriel (Christopher Walken) has come to earth to strengthen his powers by claiming the wicked spirit of a psychotic veteran. Christopher Walken speelde sinds zijn vertolking van de suïcidale Vietnamveteraan in The Deer Hunter (1978) in tientallen films de rol van labiele en vaak psychotische eenling. De 'thinking man's weirdo' is zich terdege bewust van zijn ijzige uitstraling: 'I don't need to be made to look evil. I can do that on my own.' In The prophecy wordt een antieke bijbel gevonden waarin een onbekend hoofdstuk verhaalt over een tweede oorlog tussen engelen die beslecht zal worden op aarde. De leider is aartsengel Gabriël (Walken) die het niet kan verkroppen dat God de mens heeft verkozen boven de engelen. Walken is vanaf zijn eerste scène killer dan ooit en overschaduwt de gehele cast met zijn epische monologen en legendarische lichaamstaal. Alleen Mortensen biedt nog enig tegenwicht met zijn beklemmende versie van Lucifer. Als u morgen de kerkdienst moet missen maar toch hunkert naar bijbelse zingeving dan is The Prophecy een grandioos alternatief.
