Google's AI Overviews come at steep cost to sites that users would otherwise visit. But publishers say they can’t afford to block Google’s AI from their content because it would mean risking their visibility in Google search, which drives the majority of their traffic. It's one of many ways that Google has an edge over search startups like Perplexity and even OpenAI. As a federal judge mulls how to address Google’s dominance in search, the seeds of the next wave of search are already being planted – and the tech giant holds a decisive advantage there, too.I dove into these dynamics with Davey Alba this week. A little over a year ago, Google took one of its biggest steps to date to catch up in AI: merging its AI labs, Google Brain and DeepMind, which had long separated as separate fiefdom. The union helps Google run headlong after the competition and smooth the path from research advances to product. But can Google make these changes without disrupting the culture that sparked so many breakthroughs in the first place? My latest story, with Mark Bergen:https://lnkd.in/gXibtTKm

Google X, the self-proclaimed “moonshot factory” that pioneered self-driving cars and internet connected balloons, is coming back down to earth. After years of debate and experimentation, the lab is embracing a new structure in which it will help projects spin off as independent startups. While the shift opens up more possibilities for entrepreneurs, it also signals that Alphabet will be shutting off its spigot of cash for more mature projects that haven’t proven themselves financially viable. It's a big change from the days when X engineers regularly launched balloons into the stratosphere. Sarah McBride and I interviewed more than two dozen current and former employees to tell the story of X's quest to reinvent itself for the first time. New story from Davey Alba and me: Google has fired 28 employees after they were involved in protests against Project Nimbus, a $1.2 billion joint contract with Amazon to provide the Israeli government with AI and cloud services.US labor law gives employees the right to engage in collective action related to working conditions, and these firings may test the boundaries of that protection in a new era of employee activism. As professor John Logan of San Francisco State University told us, “Tech workers are not like other kinds of workers... You can make an argument in this case that having some sort of say or control or ability to protest about how their work product is being used is actually a sort of key issue.”https://lnkd.in/gZDM2KPS

Closing out the week with a scoop with the great David Welch! Months after a devastating crash, GM's autonomous vehicle unit Cruise is quietly preparing to return to public roads -- with safety drivers on board, at least for now. As it plans its second act, the company is targeting Texas, which has liberal AV regulation. Its plans are particularly advanced in Houston, where it's preparing to dispatch safety drivers. In just a few weeks, we'll be able to read "Women Money Power," a riveting work of narrative journalism by a dear friend, Josie Cox. I had the privilege of watching Josie conceptualize this work when we were Knight-Bagehot fellows, and in the years since she's traveled far and wide to get to the bottom of a simple yet vexing question: What will it take for women to achieve true financial equality? I can't wait to read Josie's findings, which I know will be important for us all to read and absorb as we strive to cultivate more just workplaces for our sisters, our daughters and ourselves. Pre-order here!

All this month, layoffs have been rippling across Google. Today, it's X's turn. The secretive lab is cutting dozens of jobs and turning to outside investors to help fund its moonshots, according to sources and an internal memo. For years, X has captured the public imagination with projects like self-driving cars and internet-connected balloons, but few durable businesses have emerged. In recent months, employees have been internalizing the message that if they want their projects to grow, they'll need to persuade investors to come on board - just like at any other startup. Earlier this year, the Biden administration rolled out CBP One, an app that is now one of the main ways to seek asylum in the United States. It's a hallmark of the high-tech approach that Biden has pledged to take at the border. But advocates say the app has crucial flaws. It's available in only three languages. It's plagued by glitches. And appointments are so scarce that migrants often wait months in cities where they are preyed upon by criminal groups. When I visited the border a few weeks ago, the problems with the app were plain to see. One man had been waiting for an asylum appointment for almost four months; shortly after our interview, he was robbed. A young mother struggled to obtain care for her baby, who had contracted pneumonia in a migrant shelter. And migrants across the board struggled with an app that comes with high stakes and no tech support. For more on CBP One and the slick, impersonal asylum system it represents, read on here: https://lnkd.in/gHvRHZPY#immigration #asylumseekers #humanrights
