Gary Edward Mahon Obituary - 2022 (2024)

Gary Mahon 68, went peacefully to meet his Lord and Savior on the evening of Wednesday, Nov. 23,2022 after a short illness. He was the son of Caryl Mahon Chandler and William John Mahon, born on Dec. 8, 1953 in Beacon, NY and moved to Huntsville in 1964.

Gary was a Vietnam Veteran serving in the US Navy on the USS Stein after high school. He graduated from the University of Montevallo in Elementary Education and earned his Masters and EDS degree from the University of Alabama. He began his teaching career at Holy Family Catholic School before joining Huntsville City Schools and teaching 5th grade most of his career at Farley Elementary School. After he retired, he continued teaching in the Catholic School system. He was a long time member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, singing and playing his guitar in the Folk Choir and leading the choir for over 40 years. He was a 4th Degree member of Knights of Columbus and a member of the Limestone Kairos which spread the Word of God in Limestone County prison.

Gary is survived by his wife of 39 years Nancy Marino Mahon, a daughter Emily Lauren Mahon (Arthur) Luna and a grandson, Dean Shepard Luna; sister Kathleen Mahon Throckmorton and brother David (Sherry) Mahon, nephews Daniel (Madellin) Mahon and children Dean, Emma & Noah, Jeremy Mahon and son John, Joshua (Jessie) Mahon, and Caleb Mahon. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister (infant) Lisa Irene Mahon and sister Judith Adelaide Mahon Foster.

Visitation will be at 11:00 am. on Sat. Dec 3,2022, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church at 2300 Beasley Ave, Huntsville, followed by The Catholic Mass of the Resurrection with Fr. Joseph Lubrano presiding. Gary’s ashes will be interred at Huntsville Memory Gardens in a private ceremony at a later date.

In lieu of flowers the family is asking for donations be made in Gary’s name to Holy Family School Building Fund 2300 Beasley Ave, Huntsville, AL, 35816 or Limestone Kairos, PO Box 706, Huntsville, AL 35804.
