Emily - congratulations 🎉🍾 You were an amazing addition to EVM, I’m not sure you truly understand the impact you had on the department and Night Owl. I’ve rarely seen someone come in and do what you’ve done. Thank you for making us all better. I cannot wait to see what comes next for you, but whatever it is, it will be fantastic!

🎓 December 2023 Graduate Spotlight: James Doyle 🎓Hometown: Belleville, KansasMajor: Hospitality, Restaurant, and Tourism ManagementMinor: Leadership and CommunicationActivities/Involvements on- and off- campus:- Tau Sigma Honor Society - The Society for Collegiate Leadership & Achievement- The Veterans Success Center – UNL VeteransWhy did you choose the University of Nebraska-Lincoln?While UNL is 10 minutes further from my home than KSU, I’ve always bled red, especially in the Tom Osborne days. I first toured the campus in 2009, then applied in 2015 as part of an officer commissioning program as an enlisted US Marine. Life had other plans, but I’m grateful to finally attend such an awesome school now in my 30s. Given my other roles and responsibilities (city council, restaurant GM, racetrack CFO) in life, my only choice is to commute to and from school; my choice will always be UNL.What made you interested in pursuing a degree in hospitality, restaurant and tourism management?I decided to build, own, and operate a 60-room hotel in my hometown as a way to capture more revenue from spectators of various tourism entities within our county. I felt it was a good idea to show financial institutions that I’m “formally trained” in both hotel and restaurant management in order to secure more funding, and UNL was my top choice. Two years later, I’m still in love with our school and am beyond grateful for my experiences and friendships made here, even if I did have to commute eight hours weekly haha. What has been a favorite class in your major and why?*cue eyeroll from reader* All of them! The classes that actually pertain to our program are filled with real world application, even if we don’t always enjoy it! Fiduciary responsibility to culinary creativity, interactions with guests and public speaking to inventory management and marketing: everything falls into the roles and responsibility of hospitality managers, and more important leaders, within our industry. UNL does its best to set-up graduates for success so they have the solid foundation needed to excel in clubs, restaurants, hotels, tourism, events, and human resources. That means we can work literally anywhere and in any industry. What does it mean to you to earn your degree at Nebraska?Though I chose a different path than most when graduating high school, I’m proud of myself for setting out to accomplish an academic goal while being much older than my classmates and friends and now have the ability to pursue more advanced degrees. My peers have masters and doctorate degrees, so while I do have accomplishments of my own, I feel I need to keep going in my academic career. Nebraska has been awesome in accommodating my schedules and has given me the tools to continue to pursue my goals. This is only the beginning.(Continued in the comments!)#UNLCEHS #GoBigGrad
