Apex Legends Rank Distribution in June 2024 Season 21 | Esports Tales (1)

The Apex Legends seasonal rank distribution based on the data of millions of players. Find out the percentage of players at each rank and learn the true value of your skill. Updated to the latest season.

Respawn doesn’t provide anymore the official rank distribution at the end of each season, but fortunately there are many third-party websites that collect info from their users.

I analyzed all the websites available, and finally I concluded that Apex Legends Status is the most reliable one because of the huge number of visitors.

Note: only active players who played during the current season are included.

The following dataset has the purpose of creating a plausible rank distribution by collecting data from as many players as possible. With over 2.3 million (season 21), 3.4 million (season 20), 3.3 million (season 19), 3.5 million (season 18), and 3.9 million (season 17) players analyzed, we can consider this distribution very realistic.

I will update the data monthly, so we will have an idea on how the rank distribution evolves over time, and if there is any change.

Season 21

Ranked changes

  • All players in a premade Ranked squad must be within 3 Rank tiers of each other or they will not be allowed to progress to matchmaking.

  • No tuning changes to be made to ranked scoring for the launch of Upheaval.

While we are happy with how Breakout Ranked was received, there is some feedback that we want to address for the start of Upheaval. As always, we’ll be monitoring feedback and data for any required tuning changes during the season and any major updates required for the future.

— Respawn developers

Season reset

  • Where you ended in your last season of Ranked will determine where you start in Upheaval.

    • If you ended your last season in Rookie, you will be reset to 1 RP.

    • If you ended your last season above Rookie, you will be reset to Bronze IV.

Upheaval ranked rewards

  • Your end-of-season rewards will now be determined by the highest Rank tier you achieved during the entire season.

  • Split Rewards: your season-end reward badge will be animated if you match your Split 1 Rank in Split 2.

    • If you do not achieve this, you will get the normal version of your badge.

Season 19

Promotional trials

In Season 19, players will enter a Promotional Trial state when they reach the peak of their tier. During a Trial, LP loss and gains are frozen, allowing the player to focus on completing the trial:

  • Completing the conditions of a Trial within the given match count limit (either by winning a game or completing the alternative) will allow promotion into the next tier with a 250 LP promotional bonus.

  • Failing to complete the Trial within the match limit results in the Trial ending and a loss of LP based on the player’s performance.

  • Trials are time limited to 5 matches, increasing by 1 game each time a player fails and then reenters the same Trial, up to a max of 10 retries.

  • Promotional Trials are skipped during Provisional matches.

Ranked tuning

We’ve made some tuning adjustments for Ranked:

  • Increasing the amount of Rating Bonus given to help players’ ranking catch up to their skill bracket.

  • Reduce the bonus that is withheld and thus the difficulty of climbing, when players are actively pushing against their skill ceiling.

  • Provisional Bonuses are adjusted to land players closer to the expected statistical 1.5 tier drop at the end of their 10 provisional games.

Ranking difference restrictions for 3 stack premades has been removed. Players will now be able to play with friends no matter where they are on their climbs - with the caveat that your squad will face more difficult battles if there’s a bigger discrepancy between your skill.

The developers shared the following rank distribution that includes all players who played at least 5 hours in ranked during Season 18 Resurrection.

Season 18

Ranked focus, hidden MMR, and matchmaking

The info below has been shared by the developers in the Ranked AMA.

We want the focus in Ranked to be playing to win. Part of winning the match is survival and being tactical in what fights you take. What we do not want to happen is exploitative play. Hiding in positions and just refusing to engage to win is not good and healthy for the game. We want all players to run the race, and not wait for as many teams as possible to crash out.

To create the best quality matches, we need to create lobbies based on skill (MMR). Matching purely on ladder position creates a very uneven seasonal climb as players promote and immediately hit the “hard stuck” feeling. Aside from a top percentage of players, this frustrates all, and many stop competing.

You’re always matched with people of similar skill based on your hidden MMR. Your rank is a mixture of your skill and the time spent playing Ranked that season to date. So if you’re Gold 1, and you’re seeing teammates who are Diamond, you’re all of similar skill, but they have been climbing the ladder because they’ve invested more time so far.

Summary of the data

The ranked system implemented in Season 17 requires some adjustments as it is inflating the higher ranks, and Master in particular.

The ranks are supposed to distinguish players based on their skills, while right now are heavily influenced by the time one spends grinding the game.

If you play several hours a day, it is almost impossible to not rank up over time, and this reduces the overall quality of matches at Platinum and above.

I wonder which will be the percentage of players ranked at Master by the end of the season: most probably it will hit 15-20%, if not more.

Season 13

Respawn doesn’t provide an API to gather data on the rank distribution, but luckily they don’t hide all the info on the playerbase. In fact, a few weeks before the end of each season, they share the official player distribution in ranked play.

I will continue updating this article with fresh stats as soon as the developers will publish updated info during the next seasons.

Note: Ranked League Series 1 took place during Apex Legends Season 2. However, starting from Season 5, Respawn retired the “Series” terminology, so now Ranked have the same numerical cadence of Seasons.

Respawn has not released official data on the rank distribution for over a year. Before the start of season 14, they surprised the playerbase by providing data on both splits of seasons 12 and 13.

  • Master & Apex Predator: 0.20%

Summary of Season 7 and news

In season 8, the first split will take place on Kings Canyon, and the second one on Olympus starting from March 23rd.

In Season 7 we saw higher player counts and more playtime than previous seasons. This resulted in a healthy spread of players across all ranked tiers, with a notable increase to population in Platinum and higher tiers.

In the past seasons, the player pool at Diamond and above was too small, so the matchmaking couldn’t create fair matches and had to mix players with different ranks.

The developers want to improve the match quality of ranked matches, and they will achieve this goal with slightly longer queue times and more opportunities for outstanding players to earn RP.

Earning RP

In season 8, we will be able to earn RP at a quicker rate:

  • Assist threshold increased to 10 seconds.

  • Kill/Assist count has been raised to 6, which will help high-skilled players to rank up faster.

  • RP rewards begin at placement 13 instead of 10 in a match.

The graph below shows the points awarded depending on your placement, kills, and assists.

Other matchmaking changes

  • Predator has been increased to the top 750 players.

  • Players below Diamond will matchmake much more often within their own Ranks.

  • Gold: 36.25%

  • Platinum: 17.75%

  • Diamond: 1.89%

  • Master & Apex Predator: 0.12%

Summary of Season 6 and news

Diamond and higher ranks were affected by a slight inflation during season 5, but Respawn was able to reduce it in season 6 and bring the overall distribution back to season 4 numbers.

In season 7, the first split will take place on the new map Olympus, and the second one on World’s Edge starting from December 15th.

There will be no changes to the RP and matchmaking system in season 7 as the developers spent their time working on crossplay:

For Master and Apex Predator players, playing Ranked matches will earn you RP for your current platform, e.g. if you are a PS4 Apex Predator playing with PC friends, the RP you score count toward your rank only on PS4, even though there are PC players in the matches with you.

Season 5

The following distribution includes all the players who played more than five hours of Ranked. It is updated to August 13th, 2020.

  • Diamond: 4.37%

  • Master & Apex Predator: 0.31%

Summary of Season 5 and news

Mid-Season Splits have proven to be very engaging for players, so we’ll continue with them this Season.

In Season 6, the first split will take place on World’s Edge, and the second one on Kings Canyon starting from September 29th.

Platinum versus Master and Apex Predator players

According to the developers, only 3% of matches for all Platinum players had them fighting against a Master or Apex Predator.

They understand that even if the percentage is very low, this causes a worse gaming experience for the players involved, but this is a situation they are unable to realistically eliminate completely because they have to balance queue times and latency for all players in Apex Legends.

However, they are working on potential changes that might help to alleviate this issue in future seasons.

Season 4 - Ranked League Series 3

  • Platinum: 18.82%

  • Diamond: 2.51%

  • Master & Apex Predator: 0.2%

Summary of Series 3 and news

The developers are satisfied by the results obtained with the ranked split system, so there will be no changes.

In Series 4, the first split will take place on King’s Canyon, and the second one on World’s Edge starting from June 23rd.

Reconnect

The player base asked for a reconnect feature for a long time, and finally Respawn delivered it.

If you leave a match for any unexpected reason, your you will be able to reconnect by simply restarting the game and entering the lobby.

While disconnected, players’ characters won’t disappear (to prevent potential exploiters) but they will just remain in the state they were in while the player was connected. If you are not killed, you will be able to continue playing as if nothing happened.

If a player doesn’t reconnect in time, the game will remove the character, and treat their disconnect as an abandonment.

Season 3 - Ranked League Series 2

The following distribution includes all the players who played more than five hours of Ranked. It is updated to January 10th, 2020.

  • Silver: 29.1%

  • Gold: 35.3%

  • Platinum: 23.6%

  • Diamond: 7.1%

  • Apex predator 1.0%

Summary of Series 2 and news

Ranked Series 3 will have a duration of three months, and it will be divided into two splits:

  • The first split is played on World’s Edge, and the second one on King’s Canyon.

  • At the end of each split there is a soft rank reset, so the players will have to play again the placement matches.

    • Similarly to series 2, everyone be will be soft reset on their ranked position by 1.5 tiers down.

  • Ranked rewards are granted based on the highest tier achieved in either split of the series.

New tier: Master

A disproportionate number of players reached Apex Predator, which doesn’t provide an adequate level of prestige and decreases the matchmaking quality at the highest ranks, so Respawn decided to add a new tier between Diamond and Apex Predator called Master.

Apex Predator is now limited to the top 500 players per platform, and it is possible to demote from Apex Predator back down to Master if other players earn more RP than you.

More matchmaking changes

In order to fight boosting, once you get to Platinum and above, you can only party with players 1 tier higher or lower than you.

Loss forgiveness (when a teammate leaves the game or fails to connect) is often abused, so the developers will limit its usage to once per day. If you exceed the daily limit more than three times per ranked series, you will lose all forgiveness for the rest of the season.

  • Silver: 40.0%

  • Gold: 35.7%

  • Platinum: 16.8%

  • Diamond: 2.1%

  • Apex Predator: 0.2%

Summary of Series 1 and news

Respawn published a summary of Ranked Series 1, and explained what’s going to change in the next one.

In Series 2, there will be no modifications to tiers and divisions, the level requirement for ranked play will remain at 10, and playing in a group will continue to matchmake up to the highest ranked player.

The developers are pleased with the results brought by ranked leagues, and believe the score-based system worked better than a hidden ELO-type system, so they will continue utilizing it also in Series 2.

They will update the match entry RP costs, increase the amount of points in the whole system (to improve their flexibility with rewards), and implement a new kill & assist score.

At the start of Series 2, there will be also a soft reset, which will reduce our tier by 1.5 positions.

That means if you ended Series 1 in Gold II, you’ll be reset to Silver IV. Players in Platinum IV will be reset to Silver II, and Apex Predators will be reset to Platinum II.”

— Respawn

Apex Predator and matchmaking

Several players complained about the unfairness of the matchmaking as Apex Predators are usually matched with Diamond and sometimes even Platinum ranked players.

Respawn answered that they are investigating and adjusting wait times at higher skills levels, but unfortunately it won’t solve this issue. They are doing their best to balance game quality and wait times, but the situation is rather difficult in many regions depending on the time of the day and the player population.

Predators will currently only play Predators when possible, but considering the percentage of players at this rank, this is very very rarely achievable.
